Work Towards our Preliminary task

Planning
So far, we have choosen who we would like to be with for filming. I choose to go with Bex, Stuart and Andi. Next we decided which lessons we all had free so we could film then. We all agreed that either a Wednesday, a Thursday or a Tuesday were the best days to do filming.
After studying all of the different camera shots and techniques, we started to plan our preminilary video. The film could be no longer than 2 minutes.
Bex then wrote up the camera role, which included all the different shot types and techniques that we wanted to include in our film, as well as any dialougue that we wanted in our films. We all helped with ideas while Bex typed it up.
While we were doing that, me and Andi were also drawing up a rough version of the storyboard, this helped to show what shots we would hopefully use in the filming.
Our group then tryed out both a still camera and a video camera, to get use to the way they work. Unfortanlly I was away when we tryed out the vidio camera so did not get used to the camera.
Our shooting date is lesson 4, Wednesday 19th November.

Filming
Before we started to film we needed to find some actors to be in our film. This is because we were not allowed to be in our own movie. In the end we found 2 people who would be in our film. These were Shuan and Laura in year 13. Stuart had also drawn up a "snap-board" on a white board. This was to say what take it was and to brake up the filming.
For our filming we decided to go and use the Art corridor and the 6th form art room. This was because it is a quite corridor and the room is easily accesible.
Unfortanlly we did not all agree on the script and so we kind of improvised as we went along, which was interesting to say the least.
To start off with we were going to have Shaun walking along the corridor but he was to tall for the camera. We then decided to use Laura instead. All of us had a go in using the camera and thinking of what we could do to make it better.
We had fun experimenting with the camera and findin out what could work and actully working the camera.
We did go a little bit over the hour we were surposed to have and we went about 15 miniute into lunch.
Are editing is due to be on Monday the 24th @ 1:15-3:15

Editing
When we got the chance to edit we did find out some problems. One of them was we kept on changeing which side we were on when filming the shots. Another one was that when we filmed oppisite a window, the light kept on changing and it made Shuans head look dark on one side but light on the other.
We did get it all finished in the 2 hours and we have only a little bit left to do like the tittles and some little adjustments. We are hoping to do that soon.
We all had a go at the editing and i think that all we need to do is just keep on playing about with it and experimenting with it.
We have now finished all of our editing. All 4 of us did some on Monday mourning and we got most of it completed. Later on me and Becky finished off the little bits to tidy it up and then we renderred it and burnt it onto a DVD.

Here is our final peice for hte Prelimary task.

BBFC and Classification of films.

BBFC
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent company which has watching and classifing films for cinema since it was set up in 1912. It has also been classifing videos since the Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984.

Cinema
The BBFC was set up in 1912 by the film industry as an independent company to try and work out a system of uniformity to the classification of film for everyone.

The films can be changed by the local councils who can have more power. They may overrule any of the Board's decisions i.e passing films they reject, ban films they have passed, waiving cuts, instituting new ones, or altering categories for films exhibited under their own licensing rules.

Video
In 1984 the Video Recordings Act was passed by Parliament. The act stated that, any video recordings offered for sale or for hire in the UK must be classified by an authority selected by the Secretary of State. The President and Vice Presidents of the BBFC were choosen to do carry out this act and were charged with applying the 'suitability for viewing in the home' classification. At this point the Board's title was changed to BBF Classification to reflect that classification played a far larger part in the work of the Bored than censorship.

Classification
The Classification categories are:

Universal - Suitable for all. Contain a possitive framework and contain no referances to violence or anything that could upset young children.

Parental Guidance - General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Young children are adviced not to watch alone. Some scenes may be unsuitable for younger viewing.

Suitable for 12 years and over.
No-one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult.
No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video or DVD. Responsibility for allowing under-12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.

Suitable only for 15 years and over
No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video or DVD.

Suitable only for adults.
No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video.

To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults of not less than 18 years.

The Video Recordings Act 1984
The Act requires the BBFC to have special regard (among the other relevant factors) to the likelihood of works being viewed in the home, and to

-any harm to those likely to view a video
-any harm to society through the behaviour of those viewers afterwards
In considering these issues the Board has in mind the possible effect not only on children but also on other vulnerable people.

The Act further requires that special regard is paid to the manner in which the work deals with

-criminal behaviour
-use of illegal drugs
-violent behaviour or incidents
-horrific behaviour or incidents
-human sexual activity

The Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act 1937
It is illegal to show any scene ‘organised or directed’ for the purposes of the film to involve actual cruelty to animals.

The Protection of Children Act 1978
It is illegal to show indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child (under the age of 18).

The Obscene Publications Act 1959
It is illegal to show a work which is obscene. A work may be found obscene if, taken as a whole, it has a tendency to deprave and corrupt (ie make morally bad) a significant proportion of those likely to see it.

Human Rights Act 1998
Among the rights established under this Act are the right to private life and family, and the right to freedom of expression. When classifying works, the BBFC will have regard to the impact of any decision on the rights of any relevant person.

The Act permits such restrictions on freedom of expression as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary.

The Licensing Act 2003
Cinemas require a licence from the local authority in which they operate. The licence must include a condition requiring the admission of children (under 18) to any film to be restricted having regard to the recommendations of the BBFC. The licensing objectives are;

-the prevention of crime and disorder
-public safety
-the prevention of public nuisance
-the protection of children from harm
-Other unlawful material

In carrying out its responsibilities, the Board will have regard to whether the material itself appears to be unlawful in the United Kingdom, or has arisen from the commission of an unlawful act.

Homework--11/10/08

Films that I am going to be doing quick rundown of the intros of are: "Dead Calm" and "Leon" and "Jaws".

Dead Calm
-The titles are quite and fairly calm.
-The names fades in and out while the music slowly gets louder.
-Cuts to train, gets louder and busy.
-Very busy as people get off train, all searching for family-is Christmas, want to be with family.
-One guy can't find anyone. We start to think he has some significance in the film.
-Spinning camera-confusion-lost. Get a point of view shot panning the area.
-Cut to police pointing in his direction, check book. What’s wrong/what’s he done?
-Cut to inside car. Rubbish weather, side lines with mood.
-Inside the hospital, busy, lots of background noise.
-Lots of blood on face = how bad accident was.
-Zooms into wide open eye, freaky look in eye - slow fade to flashback, railway sign, place they are going to?
-Bad weather, bad mood, something bad going to happen?
-Med shot of woman singing, staying cheery.
-Med shot to baby getting out of seat. Close up of woman’s face. Worried something bad is going to happen.
-Cuts to all Slo-Mo as crash happens.

Leon
-Directed by French director Luc Besson.
-Spooky music started off with the tittles - music was like a violin and a horn.
-Ariel style camera tracking across the lake and forest. Calm areas, false sense of security. Cut to inside the City where it is not piratically busy. again, false sense of security. Close up of sign "Welcome to Little Italy". Sets scene, know where you are.
-Cuts to inside a small dark building, little natural light. Feels small.
-Close ups of two peoples eyes and mouths. Shown "Target".
-Cuts to people walking towards a door and the "target" is at the front of the group.
-Cuts to inside a small room wiht cameras, see guy look up at camera and he is let in. Shows that this group of people are worried about some one getting them.
-The group exchange conversation and then cuts to outside a room with the old man. Casts a shadow over him and this makes you wonder what is going to happen.
-Close up of the walkie talki and cut to person ringing it, can see a gun to his mouth. Tells guy on other end that there is someone here to see him and he is "serious". Cut to inside the room and you here a silenced gun shot through the phone. Cut to other room and you see blood splated aganst the wall and the a broken phone spread across the floor.

Jaws
-At the start of the scene the boy starts to walk up the beach towards his mum. The camera angle for this shot is a long shot and it is panning across the beach when we first see the boy. We guess that this boy has some significance in the film. When he asks his mum for longer in the water, and she trys to denie it, inside we want her to give him ten more minuites because we start to get emotionally attached to him.
-While Brody watchs the water we get the feeling that something is going to happen and that he may not be able to stop it. The camera angles that are used also give the audiance a sence of being there with the point of view shots.
-When the og and boy run into the water we can see that they are haveing fun but it also gives a sense of helpless.
-The long shot of us seeing the dog swimming out in the see with a stick shows us how far out he is and how helpless it is. This also makes us wonder if it could be the next victim of the shark. #
-Brody seeing the boy floating on his yellow lilo shows us another potensional victim and how helpless he is. Brody is also getting paranoid that someting is going to happen but he does not know who to watch because there are so many people in the water.
-The man in the black hat who swims underneth the boy makes Brody jump because from a distance it does look like a shark. The audiance also see this and so think that it is the shark. The camera shot also shows how far away the boy is and how helpless he would be.
-It then cuts to a medium shot of Brody and a sunburt man is blocking his view. We then get a point of view shot from Brody. And because the man is in the way, we cant see the water. This makes it annoying for us and we can also feel how the charactor is feeling.
-While Brody is trying to see over this mans body towards the water you hear a woman scream. This makes both the audiance and Brody jump because you think someone has been attacked. It then cuts to the water and the woman who has screamed and you find out it is a false alarm with someone messing about and picking her up.
-When it cuts back to the beach, you get a tracking shot of a group of young children running into the sea and splashing about. This makes the scene confusing and you wonder if any of them could be the victum.
-It then cuts to a point of view shot from under the water and you guess that it is the shark. From this shot you can see all the legs of the people in the water and you wonder who could be the victum. This creates tension and a "edge of your seat" atmosphere becuase you wonder who is going to get it?
-Once the shark has choosen its victum, it cuts to a long shot and you see the attack from a distance. This makes you want to know what is happening and you want to see it in more detail.
-While the attack is going on there is general panic of everyone and there is lots of jump cuts of lots of different views. This creates confusion on the screen and makes it look really frantic.
-Once everyone is out of the water it suddenly goes really quite. It is like the calm after the storm. This gives it an eerie atmosphere. You then get a close up tracking shot of the blood stained lilo washing up onto the shore. This only shows the damage the shark has done but not actully the size of the shark. This makes the audiance want to know what has done the damage.
